Bipasha was born on January 7th 1979 in New Delhi. subsequently the Basu family re-located to Calcutta. Bipasha is the second of three sisters, born and brought up in a Hindu Bengali family, she is fluent in Hindi, English, and Bengali. The names of her sisters are Bidisha and Bijoyeta. Unbelievable as it may sound, sexy Bipasha was considered 'ugly' in her younger years due to her dark complexion. Her name means 'Dark Deep Desire', and is also the name of a river.

Her desire to become a doctor made her study science, till her twelfth class .Fate intervened when Bipasha recoiled and passed out when dissecting a rat. Thus ended her dream of being a medical professionallater ,she opted for Chartered Accountancy. She came into the limelight when she won the famous Ford Supermodels Contest at the age of 17. She also won the Tulips Miss Super Vivacious in the same contest. Bipasha has catwalked for all leading Indian designers, besides featuring in advertisements, she did the famous video Tu Meri Mehbooba for Sonu Nigam's album, Kismat. She was spotted by the world famous photographer, Steven Mizhel, she featured in Vogue magazine. But gave it up for family in India. Her debut role in Ajnabee has won her much praise then she got Raaz which was a major hit. Her performance was excellent in this film. In 2003 Jism came which was hit. In this she played a married woman. Bipasha deserves every bit of her success, and will definitely prove to be a strong competitor in the race to claim the top spot.

On July 7, 2007 Bipasha co-hosted the new Seven Wonders of the World event along with two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank and Oscar winner Sir Ben Kingsley in Lisbon, Portugal.

Bipasha claims that she was harassed by organizers of the controversial 2006 India Day Parade in Edison, New Jersey.Organizers are now saying that they will sue Bipasha for breach of contract for not participating in the event and alleging harassment.Actress Nidhi Gill of Bipasha-the Black Beauty sent Basu a legal notice complaining that Basu had made derogatory remarks about the movie when she had never even seen it.
